About Me: Started flying in 1976. I taught myself how to fly with a Sig Kadet. I wore out a set of wheels practicing on the ground. I would taxi the plane in a left oval around me and away. This helped me practice steering the plane left and right learning the difference when the plane was coming straight towards me. Once I felt good about left ovals I practiced right ovals. After the left and right ovals looked good I started doing figure eights crossing over left to right then right to left in front of me. Next I would do high speed runs just enough speed to lift the front wheel. This allowed me trim the tail for take off. I practiced this with the plane going away and coming towards me. Next was the take off. I would gain just enough speed to lift the plane about 3 to 5 feet up and then land it. I also did this going away and towards me. Then came the big day, the first half circle flight. I took the plane off and flew a half circle landing in the grass. I would walk down retrieve the plane come back start it again and do it again. I don't know how many times I did this it seamed to be a lot. Finally I flew a full circle and then landed in the grass again. I did this several times building my confidence. Then everything I did on the ground I did in the air practicing the left and right ovals and those figure eights now all in the air with the third dimension to worry about. After all of that was accomplished I taught myself loops, rolls, wing overs, hammer heads, spins and everything that old Kadet could do. I practiced doing bomb drops with a cup setting on the top of the fuselage. I never crash that Kadet and gave it to a good friend of mine and taught him how to fly. I stopped flying around 1980 and started flying again in 2003. |
